Ip Man's Wing Chun

Adapted from the life story of Ip Man,the grand master of the Wing Chun style of kung fu and sifu of legendary kung fu superstar Bruce Lee.Ip's persistent devotion to Wing Chun is a classic example of the love and respect shown to wushu and the freedom and spirit it represents. The 108 minutes duration of this movie was filled with action-packed adrenaline rush.Of course, there are also a few humorous jokes brought in.The storyline was splendid, showing the World War II era and the glory of both China and Wing Chun.
The movie was directed by Wilson Yip and Sammo Hung(action director).Meanwhile, lead actor Donnie Yen really acted well as Ip Man and the fighting scenes were superb.
Overall i would give 4.5 popcorns up.Catch it at your nearby theaters now !

Self defence against takedowns and side punches

How would you react when the assailant is applying a takedown?
Here are 2 methods of self defence against it.

The first method would be a headpress whereby you control and push the assailant's head downwards when he is charging towards you.
Firstly, you would have to take control of his head by simply grabbing his neck ,move backwards or lower your stance if he is trying to grab your leg or torso.
Next, follow the flow and direction of his charge and pin him down.

The second method would be a reverse neck hold whereby you grab hold of the assailant's head and arm and apply a submission.

What if your reaction is slow and the assailant pin you down sideways and start striking aggressively? This video will show you how to apply an armbar immediately when you left in such vulnerable position.

Self defence against ground stamps and kicks

You've seen several ways to defend yourself when the assailant punches aggressively. Now let's take a look at self defence against ground stamps and kicks.
When you are left in such a vulnerable position, raise your hands to shield your face and move your legs and shoulder blade to avoid those strikes.
Then with the correct timing, grab the assailant's leg and execute a footlock.
Check out the video to see how it's properly done.

Armlock as a form of self defence

Here is another alternate way of self defence when the assailant is mounted on top of you.
The two methods that we taught earlier were merely getting out of the vulnerable position. However the third method, teaches you how to execute a reverse elbow hold immediately when the assailant is striking aggressively.
Head on to the video for more.

3 ways to regain your fighting stance

As you have seen in the previous videos, you can use your legs and shoulder blade as a form of self defence.
Other than that, there are other ways to make a comeback.
Video attached will show you 3 ways to get back to your fighting stance.
The first would be a reverse back roll, followed by a spinning leg scissors and lastly would be a backflip.
However, one must be agile to do that. Therefore practice makes perfect !

Defence against floor attack 2

The third and final video is an elaboration with explanation.

We will be going through self defence against leg strikes and kicks for ground fighting in our next few postings.

Defence against floor attack

How would you react if you are violently pushed to the floor? And the next thing you know, the assailant would be striking your head mercilessly.
Therefore, this posting will show you a way to defend yourself against such vicious attacks.
The first video would be a negative demonstration whereby you are helpless and at the assailant's mercy.

The second video would show you how to counter such attacks.

Notice that you are supposed to raise your legs as a stopper and use your shoulder blade as a key for movement?Sway your shoulder blade both backward and sideways and move your legs constantly to prevent him from catching it.Doing this will maintain a safe distance between you and your assailant and enable you to execute your next move.

Advanced self defence for ground fighting

After learning several ways to escape from such compromise position where your assailant is on top of you,it's time to proceed with a reversal.
You can chose to run, call for help or even retaliate by mounting on top of the assailant.Meanwhile applying an arm/foot lock would be an alternative.
The video attached is a foot lock reversal which is applied smoothly and effectively.

An alternate way for self defence in ground fighting

Here's another method for self defence when you are trapped in such vulnerable position.
You just have to put your opponent off equilibrium by grabbing any firm area such as his shoulder or shirt. Then throw your opponent overhead as far out as possible by executing a shoulder extension and a hip raise at the same time.
Proceed with a rollover immediately after opponent is being throwed.

Self defence for ground attack part 2

So have you thought of a way to get out in such vulnerable position whereby the assailant is grounding and pounding aggressively?
Well, here is an effective way to defend yourself when you encounter such circumstances.
First, you should raise your head up and hide it on any side of the assailant's ribs to prevent further bashing to your head.
Next, turn your hip to the side of your lean(IMPORTANT as to provide torque for your next move)
Then using your whole body momentum, give a elbow strike when you snap your body back to the oringal postion will send the assailant off his balance and onto the ground.
Finally, you can either get on top of him, apply any submission you know or simply run away for help.

We will go through another alternate method for self defence in ground fighting in our next posting.

Sad day for the world

We felt sombre upon hearing the Mumbai carnage that kills 120 people and dozens still taken as hostage. We hereby pay tribute and send our condolences to the victims, also wishing the hostages to be released both safe and sound.
We also hope that the Bangkok stand off and riot will come to a peaceful end, hoping everything would be fine and back to normal.

Self defence for ground attack part 1

What would you do when you fall in a tussle and the assailant proceed with violent gound
pound ? Now you in a very vulnerable position, any one devastating blow to your head or face and you will be "gone".
It is crtical that you escape from this position immediately and yet the same time hid your head from direct blows. What you normally learn from books and instructional videos which uses ear claps, neck hold and eye pokes will not work when the assailant is extremely violent and strong. In fact trying to use this moves , will give the assailant more opportunities to rain blows onto your head !I will show some solid defence which I personally used when I encounter such
attacks.

Our next posting will show you how to defend yourself against such agressive assailant.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua

Before we go into self defence ground fighting, let me introduce you a marvellous movie to catch this holiday.
Yes that's right, the movie is a Walt Disney film,Beverly Hills Chihuahua.
My friends and I was in Vivo City two days back.We decided to catch a movie and due to all the NC16 ratings and other boring local films,we decided to go kiddy for once.
Ironically, the movie is marvellous, the storyline is great and the dogs are extremely cute !
The storyline goes as Vivian,a rich celebrity who left her dog,Chloe,a pampered chihuahua under the care of her niece,Rachel. On one occasion,Rachel decided to head for Mexico City for parties and rejuvenation.
When Rachel found out that she lost her aunt most beloved treasure, she used everything up her sleeves to locate Chloe.
While Rachel,Sam(a landscaper) and Papi(a cheeky chihuahua who is smitten by Chloe's beauty) were finding Chloe, there was this loyal and stalwart German Shepperd named Delgado who took good care and escort Chloe back to Rachel safely.
Apart from those angel-like chihuahua(s),there were other breeds of dog with humorous joke.
An excellent movie comes with an excellent ending. However certain scenes tend to be more exaggerating.
Overall,I would give it 4 thumbs up.Even teens like us enjoy it,let alone children.
So what are you waiting for?Head to the nearest theatre and catch Beverly Hills Chihuahua !

Bangkok trip

We are finally back from our Bangkok trip !And we really did enjoy ourselves.
We stayed in Prince Palace hotel near Bobae Tower. The hotel is indeed classy and luxurious with facilities like swimming pool, gym, sauna and steam.Only the morning breakfast buffet is kinda bad.Reason was the buffet perpetually serve same old food daily, everyone will get sick of it.
On the other hand, shopping there was great!Things you can find in Thailand are the imported goods in Singapore.Prices are you see there are jaw-dropping.It can be as low as one-tenth of what you see in Singapore.
Staying at Bobae vicinity has a big advantage.Just take a lift down to the ground floor at any time limit between 5.30am to 10 am,you will be able to shop for cheap and good apparels.
The clothing there are meant wholesale, therefore they can go as low as $1.99 sing dollar if you purchase 3 pieces or more.
We also managed to catch a gory 3D movie titled Scar.It was so gross !
Attached are just a few scenery shots.

Applying the art of pushing in close contact situation

How do we apply the art of pushing in close contact situation?Well, the video attached will teach you how to.
Using your shoulder blade to push can sometimes fracture the assailant's ribs.
So please apply with caution. Do not use this tackle casually although it might seem harmless.

Using the art of pushing as self defence against punches

YOYOYO !Today's topic would be the art of pushing.
Well, you can apply it in situations when you do not want to hurt the opposite party.
Therefore instead of striking or choking the opposite party, pushing your opponent in correct form would keep you safe and avoid any injuries or damages.
The video attached shows you how to defend a punch using pushing.

Capoeira in Orchard road

It was a usual Saturday evening in Orchard road where everyone seems to be feasting and shopping.
However something that caught my eye was huge crowd of people gathering and watching a group of Capoeira fighters demonstrating their incredible skills.
The fighters are agile and flexible and crowds were amazed with both their skills and physique.
Their motive were to advertise the ancient Brazilian art and recruiting members for their club.
Seems cool isn't it?Well so,i managed to catch a few videos,enjoy !

Conditioning your forearm

Conditioning your forearm is just as important as conditioning your shin.
Your forearm must be strong to withstand the power of kicks during blocking.
Procedure will be the same as you apply medicated oil generously on your forearm and start rolling/hitting with a bat.

Also,it's pretty interesting to find my school National Cadet Corps(NCC) learning muay thai !
Do comment on that

Shin Conditioning

In combat sports, conditioning your shin is extremely important.Training , resting and proper nutrition play a big part.
Consume products that are rich in calcium like milk & tofu , will help to strengthen your shin bone. Do take note that vitamin D (exposure to sun) is essential to convert the calcium and over consumption of calcium over prolong period will lead kidney stones.

As for training, attached are ways to build a strong and tough shin.

Beijing 2008 Olypmpics

The Beijing 2008 Olympics has come and go and the road to 2012 London Olympics started.Last night closing ceremony marked the end of this year's main event, with stars like Leona Lewis performing and England's own soccer icon David Beckham.
Now let's take look at familiar names that made an impact in this year's Olympics.
Swimming superstar Michael Phelps from the USA won a record breaking 8 gold medals in a single Olympics. He took part in both single events and team events, which also shows that he got both skills and teamwork.''I'm sleeping in.I'm putting on weight. And I'm not going to care'' says Phelps.Just what's next for him?
Now to Jamacan sprinter Usain Bolt who broke the Olympic record at 100 metres event at 9.69 seconds.People say his speed is as fast as a bolt of lightning !Usain Bolt also clinched the gold medal at the 4x100 relay.
Next to the flops, team USA didn't do well this time round in track and field while Cuba's boxing's standard seem to have drop.
On the other hand,Brazil men's football clinch its gold medal even with star player like Ronaldinho. Was the hot favourites under too much pressure?
China's hurdles king,Liu Xiang was eliminated during the heats as it shocked the whole world !Chinese fans were all in tears.
Also scandals like boxing bitting on the shoulder and taekwondo kick to the referee who received three stitches on the lower lip was absolutely hilarious.Bitting your opponent's shoulder? Are you Mike Tyson's disciple?HAHA That kick from a spilt second could eventually cost his whole taekwondo career.
Another frequent question was Chinese gymnast He Kexin underaged?14 or 16?Let's wait and see then.No matter what, all athletes should be rightfully awarded as they tried their best.
Let's head to home news as Singapore finally won a silver Olympic medal after 48 years. The table tennis team, leaded by captain Li Jiawei and members Wang Yuegu and Feng Tianwei did team Singapore proud.
However before they can either celebrate,a controversial decision was raised by Singapore Table Tennis Association(STTA) president,Lee Bee Wah who allegedly said she would be sacking manager,Antony Lee and coach,Liu Guodong for neglecting table tennis player Gao Ning.Just what exactly have they done wrong?Don't you think that this is injustice?Overwhelming response were made by furious Singaporeans as their mood were dampen even before celebration.
Now Ms Lee denied saying what's mentioned above, this is ridiculous !
Also, people seem to have forgotten about the English Premier League that started a week ago HAHA !
Enough said, please contribute by leaving a comment or tag

Restrain part two

Since we are on the topic of restrain, let's go through the aspect of the defensive moves.

Saturday, August 9, 2008

Restrain part one

In today's post,we will be looking into the aspect of restrain.Restrain consist of locks and chokes for both offense and defense.
As for now,we will concentrate on the offensive ones.
It is used in situation which you wouldn't want to hurt the assailant seriously by striking,we could opt for alternate methods like a hold or choke to restrain him while waiting for the proper authority to take over.
Alternatively if one faces a life threatening situation with an attacker, a dislocation on the joint is often quite enough to traumatise the assailant. You should capitalise on it and quickly escape.
This techniques uses minimum strength and you can usually bring down bigger opponent with the right LEVERAGE.
Attached are videos of restrain with narratives.

Thank you for sharing your views and highlighting martial arts like muay boran and krav maga.
Most experienced martial art exponent, are capable to inflict serious injuries to any untrain human on the streets. It is fortunate that we do not need to resort to such moves that is why all of us wear gloves and protective gear during sparring. The area to hit and the method to strike are also restricted to minimise injury .

However if all these "rules" is lifted and when the situation is life threatening all of us will be able to executing our own form of "krav maga or boran" with ease.

In retrospect that's why all our videos are carefully vet so that no lethal moves are featured.

We will upload basic footage of self defence soon.

Even in day to day activities, breakfalling helps. It keeps you agile and boost up your confidence.

Taking a break !

After a long week of tiring muay thai training,we decided to take a short break and carry on our tour around phuket.
As there is no training on sunday,we decided to head on to the weekend night market on saturday night.
There are about 200 stores selling a wide variety of goods. Many stuffs were sold at the crowded town including tasty food, unique clothing and specially designed thai souvenirs.Price was unbelievably low, especially after bargain. Next morning,we went to the popular Kata beach to enjoy a wonderful sunday morning, tan and swim. The scenery was enchanting and the strong subtle waves that hit and pull us simultaneously was exhilarating compared to marine parade east coast park. Now i understand why Kata beach attract lots of tourist !
After being under the scorching hot sun for hours,we headed to a nearby seafood restaurant for a delicious feast.Quite a number of shops were already open and this create more shopping spree for us.
Rest and relaxation was marvellous !
